Wk 15-Classmate Conversation-Kimberly Gutierrez

For this week’s classmate conversation, I met Kimberly Gutierrez. This is her second year at Cal State Long Beach and she is majoring as a Nutritionist. Kimberly is 20 years old and is the youngest to her older brother and sister. She lives in Downey which is about 20 minutes away which isn’t that far from school. She’s Hispanic and Salvadorian, which explains her pretty green eyes! Her favorite food is Mexican food or anything with pasta. On her free time, she likes to sleep, eat and go to the gym. It was nice meeting Kimberly!

About the Artist:

For this week’s artist conversation, I met Nancy Young. She will be graduating this semester with a BFA in Printmaking. She is currently living in Costa Mesa and makes the trip to come to Cal State Long Beach to study for her bachelor degree. She doesn’t know if she’s going to go for her Masters after she graduates, but she will continue making art. She does plan on relaxing at home and working on her garden after she graduates. Ms. Young majored in graphic designing at first but changed it to Printmaking because she took Intro to Printmaking and enjoyed it.

Formal Analysis

Ms. Young focused on different printmaking in her artworks. There are different types of printmaking; intaglio, relief, lithography, serigraphy and mono print. In some of her artwork, she uses different strokes of lines. She would use lithography to make those little lines in the crow artworks. The lithography artworks are soaked in acid and the longer the artwork is soaked, the darker the lines are. Ms. Young also took a photograph of the San Francisco bridge or any scenery that she was interested in and used serigraphy to apply ink on top of the photograph to make lines. She uses different techniques to make her artworks and wanted the audience to understand that there are varieties of printmaking.

Content Analysis

Ms. Young’s plan was to have her artwork show at Cal State Long Beach, then move on to the next location after she graduates. She compares her journey of her art to the crows. The crows are the ideal of her artworks because crows start at one location and makes a nest, then they move to their next location. Her purpose is to get her BFA in print making then have her art shows in different cities. She planned everything out already and now she’s just aiming for her goals. However, Ms. Young believes that the crows focuses on other things in order to get where they want to be. She put herself in the crow’s position and had a different perspective to look at California in a different way. This is why the crow is a main artwork to her show.

Overall, I thought Ms. Young’s ideal behind her artwork was creative. It was a personal goal to finish school and continue her artwork. It inspires others and myself to keep reaching for your goals but to also have a better perspective on other things. Also, people tend to not get far in their life with their hobbies. I like how she will continues her art shows and wants to keep going. As an example to how other people starting school but not finishing because they have no motivation. It’s important to strive for the better and finish the plans we intend on doing in the beginning.

Wk 14-Activity Feedback

My 3 favorite activities

  1. Snapchat-Snapchat was one of my favorite because I didn’t have a snapchat in a long time and when I found out that we had to make one for Art 110, I was pretty excited. I love Snapchat and how fun it is! Most people who did not have snapchat didn’t know the concept of it, but it’s such an easy and great experience. Art 110 involves a lot of interacting with each other and I feel like snapchat will bring people closer by adding each other.
  2. Graffiti Writing-The graffiti writing at Venice Beach was another of my favorites. I have never been to Venice Beach before and the atmosphere was different compared to Long Beach. Likewise, I have never done graffiti before neither. Graffiti is usually known to be as “bad” thing because people tag walls and mess up the city. However, it can open people’s perspective that graffiti isn’t all the bad and it’s a way to express your feelings.
  3. Art Care Package-I thought the ACP was different compared to the other activities that we have done. I have never thought to send out an ACP to my classmate and it was really neat. It’s a great experience for others to learn about their classmates and wonder why those items may be important to them because we would never know until they tell us.

My 3 least favorite activities

  1. Photo walk-The photowalk wasn’t really my favorite because I thought the experience was boring. I was just taking pictures of the trees and I had so much time to spare after because we just stayed in one area. People already seen that part of the campus already and I thought it was a waste of time.
  2. Game Design II “Geocaching”-The geocaching art experience was harder than expected. I went to two different locations and the experiences for others didn’t do well because they could not find the geocache that people hid. Most people stole the geocache or it just disappeared and it’s not fun finding the geocache anymore if you can’t find it after 10 minutes.
  3. Moonbase Alpha-The Moonbase Alpha was my least favorite. I did not like the concept of making my character because the activity was confusing. I’m not good at making stories nor creating a character. It should not be an art experience.

Overall, I really enjoyed this class. I liked doing some art experiences and I met great people this semester. It made me interact with people more than I would usually would. This is a great way for people to meet others who are not only from Long Beach. However, I disliked the discussions on Tuesday. I did not like being forced to talk on a mic in front of 100 students, it’s to nerve wrecking for me.

What could make the class better?

It would be great if you explained the art experiences more througly because sometimes I was confused and didn’t know what to do, but realized that the art experiences were easy. In my opinion, I thought this class was easy and fun. Just keep up the great work!

Wk 14-Art Experience-Sketching in the Garden

3 abstract

3 representational

3 abstract

3 representational

For this week’s art experience, we went to the Japanese Garden to sketch. This was my first time going to the Japanese Garden and it was beautiful. I’m not that great at drawing, but I tried my best when it came to the representational drawings. I tried to make it more detailed and exactly how the scenery looks in person. However, I was lost at first with the abstract drawings so I did fast sketch of those and tried to make it look similar to the scenery but also different at the same time. The abstract photographs were my favorites because it focused more on one item which made it different to how it would look if the photos were taken further away. It shows more details and the difference between a representational photograph. Furthermore, this was a great experience because usually for our art activities, we usually would have to interact with our classmates but this experience was very peaceful and quiet. I would definitely go back to enjoy the scenery.
